koransakti.co.id – While the Kansas City Chiefs secured a decisive 30-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, the biggest drama unfolded after the final whistle when a heated scuffle broke out at midfield between Lions safety Brian Branch and Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The altercation marred the conclusion of a frustrating night for the Lions, whose four-game winning streak was snapped at Arrowhead Stadium.
What Sparked the Scuffle?
The incident began as players met near midfield. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes attempted to give a high-five to Branch, who walked past him. Smith-Schuster then approached Branch to exchange words. In response, Branch delivered an open-handed strike to Smith-Schuster’s facemask, knocking him to the ground.
“It was a childish thing, but I’m tired of people doing stuff in between the play and refs don’t catch it,” Branch said afterward, admitting his frustration. “I should have never did it. It was childish.”
Smith-Schuster, who was left with a bloody nose, leaped up to retaliate, and dozens of players from both teams converged on the scrum before being separated by coaches and other players. “After the game, I expected to shake his hand and say, ‘Good game.’ But he threw a punch,” Smith-Schuster commented.
Coaches Condemn the Altercation
Both head coaches strongly condemned the incident. Lions coach Dan Campbell called Branch’s actions “inexcusable” and stated, “It’s not what we’re about. I apologized to Coach [Andy] Reid and the Chiefs, and Smith-Schuster. That’s not OK.”
Chiefs coach Andy Reid noted the severity of the strike, saying, “The guy came up and hit JuJu for what looked like no reason… he did pretty good damage on JuJu’s nose.” Branch may face a significant fine or even a suspension for his actions.
Game Recap: Mahomes Leads Chiefs to Victory
On the field, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs’ offense with an impressive performance, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for another. The Chiefs’ defense successfully contained Detroit’s key players, holding quarterback Jared Goff to just 203 passing yards and star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to only 45 yards.
“That’s a physical team, and they have a mentality that they come in to play with, and we’re going to match that mentality,” Mahomes said after the game.
